It was a cold and stormy winter day

It was a cold and stormy winter day, the worst storm in 3 years was about to hit Perth and we were getting ready to beat the elements. We were going to support the West Coast Eagles in a top game against the Hawthorne Hawks (last year’s grand final winner).

A long sleeved shirt, our Eagles fleace and skarf, winter jacket, gloves and “muts” but even more important our yellow rain ponsho’s. No we haven’t moved, we still live in the warm city of Perth (that is the other 9 months of the year) but it is really cold right now. It is only 15 degrees and it has been raining non-stop for almost 3 days. I can hear you think 15 is not that cold but remember, we don’t have central heating. We should be happy though that the winter rains have finally arrived. We desperately need the water to fill our drinking water supplies.

But anyway we got on a “packed to the rafters” special footy train which drops us at 250 meters from Subiaco Oval. The train station is a 10 minute drive and the ride is for free as part of your footy ticket. The funny thing is that the train is packed with groups of ladies in their 60s who left the husband at home and who are going to footy. They are probably the most fanatic supports and have been so for over 30 years.

And yes the storm hit the city during the game, a curtain of rain covered the stadium and for a moment it seemed we would loose the stadium lights. Lucky the teams change position after every quarter because with winds over 100km/hr it there no control on the ball no matter how good the footy player.

And no, we did not get wet. We had covered seats but did not know that when we bougth the tickets.

Our Eagles beat the Hawks with 16.11 (107) to 13.9 (87).

We must be Eagles fans at Western Power,  because we kept the lights on during the game. But by the time we got home at 10pm the lights went out and we had to search the house for candles and flashlight.

Good excuse to go to bed early as I was still not feeling to well from all the booz from the night before.
